Condé Nast Traveler: Louisville
Last fall I got the opportunity to shoot a feature story for Condé Nast Traveler Magazine in Louisville. The two things that stand out most were the hospitality and the bourbon - I wouldn’t consider myself a big whisky drinker but it speaks volumes to the former that I staggered back home under the weight of 6 or 7 bottles of the latter gifted to me over the course of the week that I was there. Another surprise were all the amazing street murals absolutely everywhere.
The shot list was a healthy mix of food & restaurants, portraits, neighborhoods, bars and iconic locations like the Louisville Slugger factory and Churchill Downs racetrack. I improvised a studio in my hotel room to do a portrait of My Morning Jacket drummer (and foodie) Patrick Hallahan and met Food Network host Damaris Phillips on the Big Four Bridge at sunrise. Being a bit of a foodie myself, an iconic stop for me was 610 Magnolia in old Louisville - celebrity chef Ed Lee’s Asian/Soul/Bistro.
