This past January, Sara Domville of Salty Days Media, got the band back together to shoot another cookbook project. The previous project was for Boston Beer Co.’s Sam Adams: Our American Dream Cookbook and this time out was for HelloFresh and their latest book, Unboxed. It was a packed couple of weeks in the studio, including “Mandatory Black Coverall Day” and some time with special guests Kristin Bryan and Michelle Doll Olson, the founders of HelloFresh. It couldn’t have happened without our fearless and talented Art Director, Ali Ziegler, and the warriors in the kitchen, Joy Howard and her team - Rachel Michel and Laura Sui.

I love a cookbook. It’s always amazing to see one come into being, especially stepping back at the end to see the wall of test prints – very satisfying.

Early this spring, Condé Nast Traveler packed me off to Chicago for a week to photograph a story for the magazine. It had been a good, long time since my last visit to the Windy City, but it was just as fabulous as I had remembered it. It was my usual brief of people, places, food and city-scapes. Perusing the shot-list I noticed Nick Cave and I thought, “I didn’t realize the musician lived in Chicago”. About an hour later, a lightbulb fizzled on in my head - Nick Cave the artist, who I absolutely know and love, lives and works in Chicago. Let’s just say my trip to his studio will be one of the highlights of my life.

Last fall I got the opportunity to shoot a feature story for Condé Nast Traveler Magazine in Louisville. The two things that stand out most were the hospitality and the bourbon - I wouldn’t consider myself a big whisky drinker but it speaks volumes to the former that I staggered back home under the weight of 6 or 7 bottles of the latter gifted to me over the course of the week that I was there.

In 2006 I took a personal trip to Kyoto. My friend Michi said I would like it. At the time I was living in New York City and she said, “Don’t go to Tokyo. It’s a big city. You live in a big city. You’ll like Kyoto.”

You get your five minutes and you try to make every second count. She walked onto set as calm and cool as a spring breeze, a picture of humble and peaceful confidence. Honestly, it was impossible not to have a little crush on her. Luckily the people of Boston felt the same way and they now have the most “bussin’ fire” mayor in America. Wutrain ya’ll.

I took note of some interesting leads and then looked up Ilene’s contact info in the mast head. We had lunch a few days later and she asked me if I wanted to shoot for the magazine - just like that. And in the blink of an eye it’s been 18 years.
